Poise and grace are the utmost importance to Paul-Vincent Avril, the current proprietor of Clos de Papes. Since 1873, his family has been cultivating and producing low yield, high quality wines from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Be sure that even when the wine market sees a surplus of fine wines for sale, Clos de Papes had no problem finding suitable, eager homes for their product. Hailing the highest scores and kindest words from the wine world’s most respected critics, Clos des Papes most recent accolade was being deemed Wine Spectators #10 wine of the year in their annual Top 100. These wines are rich, heady and hard to find due to the small production. Vintages to look out for: 2001, 1995, 1994, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1985 and 1978.
Tasting Notes
- WA92–94
- From yields in range of 15 hectoliter per hectare, the 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape is reminiscent of the 2008 and reveals a healthy ruby color to go with the classic kirsch, dried flowers and spice notes that I always find in Avril’s wines. Showing an almost Pinot Noir-like texture with medium to full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and outstanding length, it will certainly be one of the more approachable, forward wines from this estate, and it should be a low to mid-nineties scoring effort. As I commented in my recent retrospective article, Clos des Pape is one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape. Range: 92-94
