The Bordeaux Classification of 1855 was a single effort that proved to be one of the most pivotal actions in wine history. Emperor Napoleon III decreed that the wines of the Left Bank of Bordeaux be ranked by current price points into five tiers of importance so that visitors to the first World’s Fair could differentiate between and compare the finest wines.
Only five of the 61 ranked chateaux were considered to be among the top tier in 1855. They share a regal title - 1er Grand Cru Classé, or "First Growth". Although ranked the same, their wines are individually expressed through the terroir and traditions of each of the five chateaux. Bordeaux wine production is strictly regulated, and the winemaking practices of First Growth Chateaux typically exceed even the stringent AOC requirements. As a result, exceptional market demand makes these wines very difficult to acquire without a trusted source. With our provenance guaranteed, we have an impeccable inventory of the most exclusive, sought-after, and famous First Growths.
These wines were shipped temperature-controlled, professionally stored, and backed by Provenance Guarantee.
