The Winery

O’Shaughnessy

O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery sits at 1800 feet on the heralded Howell Mountain appellation in the beautiful Napa Valley. Founded in 1996 with the first of three contiguous parcels purchased by Betty O’Shaughnessy, the estate encompasses one hundred and twenty acres with forty two planted to vine. Winemaker Sean Capiaux has overseen the planting of the vineyard and selected numerous clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and all eight of the historic Bordeaux varietals for this unique property. An 12,000 square foot cave and state of the art winery of stone, steel and glass were built to Betty and Sean’s specifications by local architect Michael Guthrie. O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery owns two vineyards on Mount Veeder planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon. Rounding out the mountain vineyards is a thirty-acre Oakville estate with twenty-seven planted acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery employs modern equipment to produce classic wines which are naturally fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered. These techniques allow the varietal character and terroir of O’Shaughnessy Estate vineyards to be the stars of the show.

Tasting Notes

WA94
The only 2006 I tasted is a re-evaluation of the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, which is performing better now than it did last year. A dense purple color in addition to plenty of creme de cassis, crushed rock, blueberry, and brioche-like notes are found in this full-bodied Cabernet. It avoids the rustic tannins of this vintage, and exhibits good sweetness and purity of fruit. Consume it over the next 15-20 years.
CG92
The pair from O'Shaugnessy serves as a fine reminder that well-made wines will be found in great years and difficult ones alike, and, if this deep, keenly defined youngster is very much built in the sturdy Howell Mountain style, it still offers up loads of very precise Cabernet fruit and shows classic balance with the inner mass to properly buffer its age-demanding tannins. It is a touch tough, to be sure, but it has the right parts in all the right places to grow for a good many years.
