Pride Mountain Claret Reserve 2004

The Winery

Pride Mountain

Nestled in the Mayacamas Mountains between St. Helena and Santa Rosa, the picturesque 235 acre estate of Pride Mountain Vineyards produces unique wines in contrast to those made in the neighboring valleys. The vineyards are set above the fog line, which enables the grapes to be exposed to California's hot sun from dawn to dusk. As a result, the flavors of these wines tend to be rich with ripe black fruits, "balance, nuance, and complexity." They are made to be approachable at a young age with the capability to age beneficially for 10-15 years. Cheers to Pride Mountain wines!

Summary

The 2004 Pride Mountain Claret Reserve is a refined Bordeaux-style blend, primarily composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing the dual heritage of Napa and Sonoma fruit. This medium to full-bodied wine exhibits rich aromas of black raspberry, mocha, and coffee, complemented by hints of dried berries and herbal notes. Its dense, plum-colored profile reveals a smooth, silken texture with a firm mineral backbone and vibrant acidity. The wine's complexity is enhanced by a touch of oak spice and a slightly sweet finish, making it enjoyable now while also promising great aging potential. This limited 1.5L magnum format adds to its collectability. (89% Sonoma, 11% Napa)

Tasting Notes

70% Merlot; 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, dense and highly extracted with layer upon layer of caramel, vanilla and sweet toast overlying its considerable currant and cherry-like fruit, this potent young wine has lots in reserve despite being very showy…
WA95
A blend of 89% Sonoma and 11% Napa fruit, the 2004 Reserve Claret is composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. More coffee, toffee and caramelized red and black fruit aromas jump from the glass of this dense plum/purple-colored wine. It reveals a slightly lighter edge than the Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to full-bodied with beautiful fruit, it is more compact than the Cabernet, but is also a great example of Northern California viticulture. This full-bodied beauty will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for 15-20 years thereafter.
