Château L'Évangile

"...full and elegant wines, with an unmistakable finesse and bouquet.” For many fans, the subtle and elegant quality is indeed the mark of this wine."
- Dussault Press

L’Evangile is described by many as the “Grand vins de Bordeaux” in the Pomerol appellation. This is the smallest of the recognized wine growing appellations of Bordeaux. The estate was established in the 1700s, and it was a century before the notoriety began to accumulate. It is co-owned most recently, since the 1900’s, by the Chaperon family and Baron de Rothschild (think old world Opus One). Château L'Évangile is in a classy neighborhood, surrounded by Petrus, Cheval Blanc and La Conseillante. Production is limited to 2,000-3,000 cases, so this Pomerol is hard to come by. The vineyard plots are batched and fermented separately before blending to preserve vineyard personality.

Stylistically, the juice is concentrated, tannic, and in need of serious cellar time (up to 20 years). Notes of minerality, dark berries and purple flowers, chocolate and plums are most typical for these wines. Vintages to look out for that have been favorable to Pomerol include 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005.

Tasting Notes

WS93
Beautiful aromas of crushed berries, chocolate and spices follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a spicy, refined aftertaste.
WA92
This wine is closed, backward, and marginally less impressive than I thought from cask. It is still an outstanding l’Evangile that may prove to be longer-lived than the sumptuous 1990, but perhaps not as opulently-styled. It remains one of the year’s’s top efforts. The dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of minerals, black raspberries, earth, and spice. The bottled wine seems toned down (too much fining and filtration?), compared with the pre-bottling samples, which had multiple layers of flesh and flavor dimension. High tannin in the finish and plenty of sweet fruit on the palate suggest this wine will turn out to be extra special. Could it have been even better if the filters had been junked in favor of a natural bottling? I think so, yet that being said, the wine’s ferocious tannin level cannot conceal its outstanding ripeness, purity, and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
