The history of Leoville Las Cases can be traced back to the 17th century. A neighbor to Château Latour, this Saint-Julien estate is a second growth producer releasing around 180,000 bottles of its Grand Vin, and 250,000 bottles of its second label Clos du Marquis. It is one of three parts to Leoville, the others being Barton and Poyferre. The most impressive of the three vineyards, will stop a taster in its tracks.
Leoville Las Cases made history by being the first Bordelais Château to introduce a second label, and again when it took 6th place in the Judgement of Paris in 1976. Many regard Leoville Las Cases as a “super second”, meaning that the wines stand up to its neighboring first growths. The estate consistently produces beautiful wines.
Tasting Notes
- WS95
- Big and ripe. Dark ruby-garnet color. Very ripe berry, chocolate and plum aromas. Full-bodied and chewy, with lots of tannins and a very ripe fruit finish. Tight, muscular and concentrated. Needs time.
- WA93
- Performing better from bottle than it did from cask, this blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc has put on weight over the last year. It exhibits the classic style of both Las Cases and St.-Julien in its deep black currant notes interwoven with sweet cherries, wet stones, and toasty vanillin. Made in a structured, medium to full-bodied style with superb concentration, beautiful purity, and admirable symmetry, this beauty is one of the strongest efforts of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. Also tasted: 2004 Clos du Marquis (88)
