The Winery

Maison Louis Jadot

The etched Bacchus on the backdrop of the inimitable yellow label synonymous with Maison Louis Jadot has been a hallmark of quality wines for nearly two hundred years. The profile has grown substantially since the early 19th century when the Jadot family owned only the Clos des Ursules plot. Today, Maison Jadot has vinified wines from over 100 hectares throughout the Cote d’ Or. The essence of expressing the terroirs within Burgundy is a formidable task. The mosaic created by Jadot’s winemaking team can be treasured from wine-lovers at all levels. Whether it is from a regional view spanning the Beaune and Nuits or more intimately from within crus of one village, the artisan appreciation of Jadot’s wine profile can be a life-long study. Take a moment to expand your own wine profile with some great bottles from a French treasure.

Tasting Notes

WA91–93
The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques (domaine) has a roasted black fruit-scented nose. Medium-bodied, lush, and delicious, this is a pure, sweet red cherry and blackberry-flavored offering. While it does not have the power or concentration of Jadot's finest vintages of Clos St.-Jacques, this wine relies on elegance, purity, and definition. This is a gorgeous, flavorful, highly delineated effort that possesses copious quantities of supple tannin. Range: 91-93

This continues to sail along as though it's in a time warp because while there is some secondary development noticeable on the nose, the aromatic profile remains largely youthful with fresh notes of various red berries, plenty of Gevrey-style earth and a gamy character. There is equally good vibrancy and detail to the middle weight mineral-driven flavors that are still shaped by firm though by no means hard tannins, all wrapped in a balanced, long and delicious finish. This is really quite lovely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, it seems clear that not only is this still on the way up but that greater depth is on the way. I would advise holding any bottles that you might have for another 4 to 7 years before beginning to drink them in earnest. In any event, the '99 CSJ should hold for years to come.
