Pethel’s 2007 Corton Renardes is a one-off, as the grower pulled the contract thereafter. Pungent crushed stone, game, and leather mingle with lightly-cooked dark plum and cherry that turns exotically spicy on the back end, even as the wine reprises game, leather, stone, and faintly gum-numbing tannin. Pethel reports that triage had to be especially rigorous here – 5 barrels were expected and only two and a half’s worth of fruit retained! – and I harbor a suspicion that some rot may still have been let through, and would plan to monitor this carefully with an expectation of drinking young.
