The Winery

L’Aventure

Make no mistake about it though, these are all big, ripe wines; I find them utterly compelling and hard to resist.
– Jeb Dunnuck, the Wine Advocate

Before becoming Owner and Winemaker of L’Aventure, Stephan Asseo began his career by first making wine in 1982 after establishing Domaine de Courterillac in Bordeaux. For the following 15 years he spent his time fine tuning his artisan winemaking techniques in his home country, he began searching for the best terroir for his specific style of craftsmanship and landed on Paso Robles, California. The combination of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, the deep calcareous soils, and the maritime cooling influences allowed for the topography to be ideal for Asseo and his world class wines. The 127 acre estate in southwest Paso Robles is planted to Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc. The popularity of the L’Aventure wines has been propelled further due to their small production of only 8,000 cases, and continue to receive positive reception vintage after vintage.

Tasting Notes

WA90–93+?
The 2016 Estate Cuvee reveals a youthful bouquet of crème de cassis, ripe plums, licorice, pencil shavings and anise, framed by a generous application of creamy, spicy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ripe and heavily extracted, clamping down on the tongue and gums with an impenetrable wall of firm, chewy tannin that makes it hard to read. It's a bit too soon after bottling to truly get a handle on this, so I've given it a hesitant bracketed score. It's a blend of 52% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Petit Verdot that was matured in 90% new oak.
