Deep ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, cocoa powder, menthol and spicy oak. Huge, thick and superripe, with compelling sweetness of raspberry and strawberry confiture; lush and mouthfilling but still rather youthfully unevolved in the middle. Very long finish features suave, even tannins.

The 1998 Jacob-Hart Vineyard Pinot Noir is aromatically unyielding. This medium to dark ruby-colored wine is, like the previous offering, backward and ungenerous at present, yet it exhibits all of the qualities required for an outstanding rating. Copious quantities of black cherries, blackberries, cola, spices, and hints of mocha can be found in this intensely flavored effort. Firmly structured and somewhat foursquare, it will require cellaring, but should blossom into a powerful, extroverted, and flavorful Pinot. Drink it over between 2003-2008+.
