Cimarossa

Genoa native Dino Dina christened his Howell Mountain vineyard Cimarossa (pronounced Chim-a-rossa), Italian for “red hilltop.” A very special site indeed, where grapes and olive trees grow side by side in soil composed primarily of red volcanic rock and dust. Not much can be cultivated on these steep slopes, rising from 1,800 to 2,300 feet in elevation. The grape clusters are small, the berries are tiny, and the flavors are deep.

Tasting Notes

WA93+
As for the 2013 Riva di Ponente, this comes from a 1.4-acre vineyard with a full western exposure essentially on the other side of the hilltop where Cimarossa is located. The wine exhibits a similar opaque purple color and a full-bodied, dense, pure style. It seems to have the highest level of tannins of all four wines and is the most backward as well, but rich and balanced, with impressive length. I would put this one in the cellar for a good 3-4 years and drink it over the following two decades.
