Leitz’s just 7.5% alcohol 2011 Rudesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spatlese is correspondingly high in residual sugar, but happily not at all dominated by sweetness. Ripe white peach along with Normandy cider-like pear and apple are drizzled with fresh lime juice and wreathed in honeysuckle, their luscious alliance on a delicate, silken palate transparent to crystalline impingements reinforced by palpable residual CO2. Long, polished and pure, if somewhat static – with a seductive sense of inner-mouth perfume that grew as the wine took on air over several days – this beauty should be worth following through at least 2030 and may well be even more exciting a dozen years from now than it is today.
