Quinta do Carmo, owned by Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Chateau Lafite Rothschild), is one of Alentejo’s old line producers, although changes are in the air, with replanted vineyards, and the departure of Julio Bastos, now the owner of Dona Maria. The 2004 RESERVA is a very attractive wine, approachable, but structured, with ripe and well integrated tannins. It is focused and appealing, perhaps a bit restrained and reticent at first, but it evolves slowly and gracefully, drinking better the next day. Its smooth, friendly demeanor makes it a pleasure to drink, and when it finally opens up, it is simply delicious, as well as utterly harmonious. It is suave, with a modern tinge. I liked this friendly puppy more and more as it aired out. Drink now-2014.
