Laurent 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques Vieilles Vignes – of which there is but one barrel – features prune and dried cherry shadowed by their spirituous counterparts and tinged by black tea, vanilla and nutmeg. Liqueur-like in its palate richness, yet at the same time sappy and not at all heavy, it evinces a wealth of ore-like, peaty, and pungent mineral impingements as well as savory, invigorating salinity in its long finish. The tannins here are ample and fine, with the deeply satisfying grain of a fine Oolong tea. I have to remind myself that this is not the Clos St.-Jacques in the glass, but rather what is normally thought of as a lesser sibling. That said, the vines and plot on which this grew have a long and impressive record, and the wine now in question should be well worth following for a dozen or more years.
