Etude Vineyards
Based in the Carneros region of California’s Napa Valley, Etude is a Pinot Noir-dominant producer with a focus on musical expression. Founded in 1982, a year before the Carneros AVA was officially founded, by Tony Soter, the winery was acquired in recent years by Treasury Wine Estates. Etude wines are unique because, as opposed to the rest of Napa Valley, the Carneros sub-region is significantly cooler thanks to breezes from the San Pablo Bay, and can grow delicate, bright, and balanced styles of Pinot Noir. Although their flagship is Pinot Noir, the winery also produces bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Rutherford and St. Helena as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.
Tasting Notes
- JS95
- This is the real deal with lead pencil and oyster shell. Currant undertones. Full body and fine tannins. Flavorful and intense. A beauty. A shame it's the last vintage! Drink now or hold.
- WA90+
- The most underrated wines in the entire Etude portfolio are their Cabernet Sauvignons. I had a chance to taste from the great 2013 vintage. They are all noteworthy achievements. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (like all of the others), shows a dense opaque purple color, notes of pen ink, blackberry, licorice, creosote and a long, full-bodied, heady mouthfeel. This is a much smaller production cuvée than usual because 46 barrels were destroyed in the earthquake in August 2014. This wine should drink well for 10-15 years.
