The Winery

Olivier Bernstein

Olivier Bernstein is one of the younger generation of micro-negociants who owns no vineyards, but rather sources fruit from a variety of vineyards. In just a few years, Bernstein has put together an impressive collection of wines from some of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious appellations... Stylistically, these are fleshy, generous wines that stand apart for their textural depth.
– Antonio Galloni

Although they only released their first vintage in 2007, the team behind Olivier Bernstein has established themselves as some of the new superstars of Burgundy. The negociant has a range of six Grand Crus in its portfolio including Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, and Chambertin Clos de Bèze from Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Bonnes Mares, and Clos de la Roche. Along with the Grand Crus, Bernstein produces three Premier Crus wines. Not only is most of the Bernstein family involved in all aspects of the winemaking, they are descendants of prominent music publishers. Today, Olivier himself takes the most pride in his vineyard management efforts. He personally manages vineyard work for all but one of his sources and has actually purchased two of the vineyards that he has been working with since he began: Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux and Mazis Chambertin. Bernstein is a quintessential example of thoughtful winemaking and does not seem to be stopping any time soon.

Tasting Notes

V95
(Bernstein described his parcel as "at middle altitude on the south side of the Clos"): Healthy dark red. Suave, perfumed aromas of black cherry, licorice, wild herbs and violet. Lovely cut and intensity to the juicy flavors of boysenberry, violet and spices. A step up in tension from the Charmes-Chambertin; in fact, this is youthfully imploded in a way that reminded me of a 2010. This wonderfully precise Clos Vougeot fills the mouth with perfume and spreads out horizontally to dust the palate on the long aftertaste. There`s nothing soft about this beauty but nothing hard either. A spectacular young Clos Vougeot. 95??

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines` Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Olivier Bernstein has a slight earthiness on the nose, less fruit-driven than Bertrand Ambroise but perhaps demonstrating more pinoté. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a fleshy core of strawberry and cranberry fruit. There is good tension here, nicely structured with appreciable mineralité on the finish.
