Since the 1970’s, the Eisele Vineyard, located in the north east region of the Napa Valley just at the base of the Palisades Mountains, has grown Cabernet Sauvignon with impressive longevity. Fruit from this site has inhabited the bottles of legendary producers including Ridge and Conn Creek during the early 1970’s, Joseph Phelps from 1975 to 1991, and Araujo from the 1990’s until 2013. Bordeaux’s Pinault Family (owners of first growth, Chateau Latour) purchased the estate in 2016 and the wines were rebranded by the name of the historic vineyard itself. Biodynamically farmed, Eisele Vineyard continues to enjoy its status as one of Napa Valley’s true “cult” wines.

The 2013 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa showcases a rich history of organic and biodynamic farming. - The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, which is also 100% of this varietal, behaves similarly to how the 2013 Altagracia did compared to its older sibling. Inky, bluish purple with a beautifully pure nose of blueberries, blackberries and cassis with background floral notes, this full-bodied wine (14.8% alcohol) tastes a lot younger and less evolved than its 2012 counterpart. I’d think this was a barrel sample, then again, it’s only been in bottle for three months. Beautiful layers of fruit, velvety more noticeable tannin, exquisite purity and an almost endless finish make for a remarkable effort that needs another 5-6 years of cellaring and should keep 30 to 40+ years, particularly in view of how Eiseles from the early 1970s have lasted.
