Numanthia
As one of the breakthrough producers of the Toro region in northwest Spain, Numanthia is a producer well-known for their bottles made from Tempranillo. Named after the neighboring town of Numancia, this producer is credited to playing a key role in bringing the region into the international spotlight. The 130 year old vines are dispersed across numerous small plots on the hilly, dry soils along the banks of the cherished Duero River- near the Portuguese border. Numanthia is most well-known for its Termanthia wine which is made from a single 11-acre parcel of 120-year-old vines, and although the estate was originally founded in 1998, it has been owned by LVMH since 2008.
Tasting Notes
- WA95
- The 2008 Termanthia has better precision on the nose compared to the 2007, with more minerality coming through, and lifted black cherries entwined with lavender and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, offering slightly honey red cherry fruit with dark plum and a hint of mulberry and creme de cassis. It is very well-balanced, although there is still some oak to be subsumed towards the finish. Drink 2017-2030.
- WE94
- Lush and classy, with earthy blackberry, hard spice, chocolate and lemon peel aromas. The palate is a mile deep and tannic, but it's not too hard or mean, and it tastes fantastic, with ripe blackberry, chocolate, spice and toast flavors. Complex and masculine, with tobacco and woodspice on the finish. Drink from 2012 through 2016.
