Castello dei Rampolla
Castello dei Rampolla has been family-run since 1739 on the same farmland in Toscana, however only in 1975 was this estates first wine release: Chianti Classico. At a time where Chianti was an afterthought of quality, Alceo di Napoli Rampolla and his winemaker Giacomo Tachis sought to change the stigma. They also were one of the firsts in Toscana to plant Cabernet Sauvignon and blend it with Sangiovese in what is now famously called a Super Tuscan. This family estate continues to pursue greatness by their Chianti Classico, Sammarco and Vigna d’Alceo bottlings that consistently receives scores from critics in the upper echelon.

- Readers should do whatever they can to get their hands on a few bottles of the 2013 d`Alceo. Seamless and voluptuous in the glass, it is an epic wine that embodies all the qualities that make these terraced vineyards in Panzano so special. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, plum, licorice and spice meld together in the glass, but it is the wine`s textural intensity that elevates it into the realm of the profound. The 2013 has been nothing short of moving on the two occasions I tasted it recently.
