The Winery

Ghislaine Barthod

Ghislaine Barthod has fully arrived at the top of her game and she is undoubtedly one of the finest vigneronnes in the entire Côte… if classically styled ultra-pure and understated Chambolle floats your Burgundy boat, then the Barthod wines should be on your very short list along with the like of Roumier, Mugnier and de Vogüé as they really are that good. – Allen Meadows, Burghound

Because of their powerful and age worthy Pinot Noir wines, Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is one of the most outstanding producers in the Burgundian appellation of Chambolle-Musigny. It began in 1986 when Ghislaine and her husband, esteemed producer Louis Boillot, purchased their current land overlooking the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Feusselottes. Although they share the vineyard management team, all commercial aspect and overall winemaking procedures are kept separate. The domaine offers eight different Premier Cru bottlings that showcase the variety of sub-terroirs that their 15 acres of Chambolle have to offer, but their highest valued wine is the revered Bons Batons Bourgogne Rouge that comes from a vineyard well known for its abundant value.

Tasting Notes

WA91–92
From just below Bonnes Mares, a 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes exudes a candied yet at the same time faintly tart cherry and black raspberry character, with sage, sassafras and resin overtones very reminiscent of its Grand Cru neighbor, and a silky, refined texture to a palate that, however, never lacks for brightness. Chartreuse-like and red-fruited, the finish here resembles an elixir, yet with persistent freshness of fruit, the pungency of herbs and a faint nip of white pepper offering counterpoint.
V89–92
Musky aromas of black cherry and crushed stone. Dense and suave, with black cherry and mineral flavors complicated by a peppery, herbal quality that reminded me of Bonnes-Mares. A tightly wound, sharply delineated, solid wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. With its powerful spine and classically dry, firm finish, this comes across as a bit youthfully austere, but it benefits from the characteristic volume of the vintage.
