When Polish Stanilaus Serafin moved to Burgundy in the early 1900s, he never expected to operate one of the most powerful domaines in the region. His son Christian inherited the domaine in 1988 after leading the winemaking team for nearly 20 years before that. Like most of the producers in Burgundy, Serafin relies on old vines with low yields. Combined with his intense oak regime, the resulting wines are rich and concentrated and are incredible with some age. Today, the estate is run by Christian’s niece and daughter.

- From bottle, the 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is reserved but full of promise, opening in the glass with a reticent bouquet of cassis, cherry, plum preserve, orange rind, coniferous forest floor and nicely integrated smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and beautifully balanced, with a sappy core of fruit, good concentration and excellent energy. While this is firmly shut down at present, its structural refinement and vibrancy bode very well for the future.
