Domaine de Montille
Although the de Montille family roots can be traced back to the middle of the 17th century to the Auxois region of the Côte-d'Or in France, it was not until 1947 that the Domaine de Montille vinified its first vintage of wine. Before purchasing the physical estate the family was known as negociants, but quickly turned into one of the top red Burgundy producers when they began purchasing parcels of land from the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.
Today most of their sought-after wines, specifically 75%, come from land that has been classified as either premier or grand cru. Since the 1990s, the estate has made an effort to create nearly natural wines by obtaining their biodynamic and organic certifications as well as only using native yeasts and avoiding chaptalization.
Tasting Notes
- WA90–92
- The 2013 Clos Vougeot, which is two-thirds whole-cluster fruit (although you cannot tell one bit on the nose) was raised in 40% new wood. It has a tightly-knit bouquet with brambly black fruit and just a touch of undergrowth coming through with aeration. The palate is smooth and harmonious, a little sinewy at the moment and tightly wound on the finish where I would like to see it develop more delineation once in bottle. This is quite a "burly" Clos de Vougeot with good grip at the moment. Give this three or four year’s bottle age.

- Bright, deep red. Medicinal cherry, wild herbs, licorice and a whiff of menthol on the nose: very Clos Vougeot. Juicy and intense but quite tight in the early going, hiding its personality today. Showed a creamier middle and rather suave tannins with aeration but this rather elegantly styled Clos Vougeot will nonetheless require patience.
