Based in Pommard in the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Comte Armand has been owned by same family in since prior to the French revolution (1799), an astonishing feat. The domaine owns the vineyard of famous 13-acre Monopole Clos des Epeneaux, a 1er Cru in Pommard as well as vineyards productions: Auxey-Duresses, Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru, Volnay and Volnay Frémiets.
The Clos des Epeneaux’s rich and dense composition gives way to the terroir, but has been toned down in recent years by winemaking prodigy Benjamin Leroux and now Paul Zinetti. Comte Armand has earned a reputation as producing some of the world’s best wines, and is among a rare group that attains the rights as a monopole.

- Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux from Comte Armand has quite a nuanced nose with dusky red berry fruit, autumn leaves and a touch of stewed black tea. I like the cohesion and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, nicely balanced and supple in the mouth. There is something easy-drinking and approachable about this Pommard: well crafted and with satisfying tension. While not the greatest in recent vintages, this is still a pleasurable Pommard that overcame the hail that destroyed 90% of the vineyard that year. Tasted September 2017.
