While taking a decorative arts course in London, Ann Colgin fell in love with wine after taking a sip of a 1961 Chateau Latour. Her degree in art history led to a job as a Christie’s auctioneer where her burgeoning interest in wine was nurtured and blossomed into a desire to establish her own winery. Colgin Cellars was created in 1992 when she and Helen Turley secured a parcel of grapes from Herb Lamb vineyard on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. By 1998, Colgin owned three vineyards which produced small yields, resulting in exquisite red wines: Tychson Hill, Cariad, and IX Estate. As Colgin is a collector of fine art, there is no surprise that her bottlings express the true art of fine winemaking.
Colgin IX Estate Proprietary Red 2014 is an exceptional Napa Valley blend primarily consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Sourced from the esteemed Pritchard Hill, this wine benefits from rocky, volcanic soils and a warm vintage, leading to a full-bodied profile with remarkable richness and depth. The aroma features a complex mix of black and blue fruits, accented by earthy notes of graphite and tobacco, offering a sophisticated bouquet. Its texture is smooth and polished, with well-integrated tannins that provide structure without heaviness. This wine showcases an impressive balance, promising longevity and an evolving character over time. Blend percentages typically range around 60–70% Cabernet Sauvignon.
