While taking a decorative arts course in London, Ann Colgin fell in love with wine after taking a sip of a 1961 Chateau Latour. Her degree in art history led to a job as a Christie’s auctioneer where her burgeoning interest in wine was nurtured and blossomed into a desire to establish her own winery. Colgin Cellars was created in 1992 when she and Helen Turley secured a parcel of grapes from Herb Lamb vineyard on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. By 1998, Colgin owned three vineyards which produced small yields, resulting in exquisite red wines: Tychson Hill, Cariad, and IX Estate. As Colgin is a collector of fine art, there is no surprise that her bottlings express the true art of fine winemaking.

The Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill 2013 originates from a historic vineyard in Napa Valley, first planted in 1886. This wine showcases a rich profile with intense dark fruit flavors such as blackberry and cherry, complemented by earthy notes and hints of tobacco and spice. Aged in new French oak, it exhibits a polished, full-bodied texture with silky tannins and a long finish. The wine demonstrates a remarkable balance of power and elegance, with savory complexities and a concentrated flavor profile, making it a prime candidate for aging. The blend consists of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

- The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard is a rival for the 2012. Opaque purple, with blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of incense and subtle toast, the wine has great intensity, incredible richness and, again, a floral blue- and black-fruited nose and flavor profile that is remarkable. The finish goes on for close to a minute. This is slightly more tightly knit than the more ostentatious 2012, but both are wines to taste and drink before you die!
