Louis Roederer

“A wine or pure pleasure and a sophisticated gastronomic wine, Cristal is both powerful and delicate, combining subtlety and precision.”
- Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, Cellar Master

Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 but did not receive international recognition until 1876 when champagne satisfied the taste buds of Emperor Tsar Alexander II of Russia. The emperor became the Champagne’s original promoter as he asked for the bottle to be in a flat-bottomed, transparent lead-crystal bottle producing the new brand, Cristal. Their prestigious Cristal is produced only from their exceptional years when the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have attained perfect maturity producing a wine of purity and elegance.

The Rose Cuvee was produced 100 years after the Brut as they wanted to combine the precision of Cristal and the intensity of rose to produce a remarkable wine. Louis Roederer is one of the remaining few family-owned houses in Champagne, and has been producing exemplary wines that deserve a place in your cellar.

Tasting Notes

V97
The 2007 Cristal Rosé opens with the most captivating, extraordinary bouquet imaginable. Sweet, exquisite and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2007 is intense yet weightless, with extraordinary overall balance and remarkable finesse. Today, the 2007 Cristal Rosé is a wine of pure seduction. There is little doubt the 2007 is a great Cristal Rosé in the making. This is the first vintage in which all of the fruit was farmed according to biodynamic principles. According to winemaker Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, biodynamic farming has brought increased aromatic presence in the fruit and also given the Pinot a bit more intensity than normal, so much so that in 2007 the blend is 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay as opposed to the 60/40 split that has been more typical over the years. In 2007, the fruit was picked in August, which is also unusual, but bud break got off to an early start, so the growing season turned out to be longer than the classic 100-day period that is typical from bud-break to harvest. All of that means the 2007 Cristal Rosé is a much more classic-feeling wine that one might have expected.

Four blocks here, the same since 1974 – two in Aÿ, one in Mesnil and one in Avize – all selected for their ripeness and ability to push this further. There's a spicy and exotic nose that has quite expressive redder fruit and more pinot-driven shape and structure. The palate has very assertive phenolics, which will benefit from further ageing; this will eventually arrive at a more central focused palate. The silkiness is there, especially on the finish. Give this until 2020 and then for 10+ years after that. Much more powerful, structured style than the regular Cristal 2007. The first year of 100% biodynamic farming in these four plots.
