Bodega Catena Zapata is one of the foremost wine estates in Mendoza, Argentina. Founded in 1902 and still in family hands, it is particularly known for its rich, full-bodied red wines, usually made from Malbec, and also for its barrel-fermented Chardonnay sourced from high-altitude sites, which combine ripeness with fresh acidity. Owner Nicolás Catena was Decanter Magazine man of the year in 2009. The estate is made up of six vineyards in the Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos sub-regions of Mendoza, at altitudes ranging from 3000-4750 feet (920-1450m) above sea level. The winery, with its striking, Mayan-influenced pyramid shape, is located in Agrelo, in Luján de Cuyo.
Catena Zapata Malbec Fortuna Terrae Adrianna Vineyard 2012 is a distinguished red wine originating from the high-altitude Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Known for its exceptional terroir, this wine showcases the unique limestone-influenced soils that contribute to its rich biodiversity. The 2012 vintage is noted for its remarkable purity and clarity, with a full-bodied profile that features firm yet silky tannins. It is characterized by tangy acidity and a depth that is often compared to renowned wines such as La Tache. With native-yeast fermentation and an aging process of approximately 18 months in French oak, this wine represents a pinnacle of Malbec craftsmanship. Only 3,000 bottles were produced, highlighting its exclusivity.
