A very ripe yet beautifully fresh nose offers up elegant aromas of dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of discreet wood spice leads to mouth coating and exceptionally rich flavors that drench the palate with buckets of dry extract on the textured and velvety finish. This is a relatively big Clos St. Denis that delivers outstanding length on the powerful and very firmly structured finale. Recommended. Range: 91-93

Spruce resin, sage, cassis, and blackberry fill the nose from a Potel 2006 Clos St.-Denis, which comes to the palate with sappy primary fruit intensity and continued herbal pungency. Suggestions of black tea; singed, grilled lamb; and steaming stones convey a dark, brooding aspect reminiscent of a number of other wines in this collection. This finishes with impressive tenacity but also a sense of opacity, which I suspect might in part be engendered by the flavors from new wood. It will be interesting to follow for at least the next 6-8 years.
