Margaux 2004 1.5L

The Winery

Château Margaux

Château Margaux is a jewel in the Medoc region of Bordeaux and is quintessential example of elegance, luxury, and balance that the rest of the world seeks. A high percentage of Merlot is blended with a Cabernet Sauvignon base compared to other First Growths and the soils are thin and gravely, producing a more feminine wine of strong aromas of dark berries, fine tannins, and a lengthy finish. The dramatic Château was declared an original First Growth during the 1855 Classification and has been a premier example of the potential of Bordeaux ever since.

Summary

Château Margaux 2004 is a prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé from the Margaux AOC, known for its storied heritage and exceptional craftsmanship. This vintage benefited from a cool summer and an ideal September harvest, predominantly featuring Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The wine is characterized by its freshness and elegance, with vibrant blackcurrant, raspberry, and plum notes intertwined with hints of spice and mint, alongside a mineral quality. The palate displays fine tannins and a balanced structure, making it approachable now while still holding significant aging potential. This vintage exemplifies the classic style of Margaux, with aging in new French oak adding depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

WE96
If one of 2004's enduring characteristics is its freshness, then Margaux epitomizes this. It is so deliciously fresh and floating, with great black currant and blueberry fruits, pointed up by spice, mint and a sense of elegance and poise. There’s no doubt about its aging potential either: just feel that heart of firm tannins.

Tasted from barrel in 2005, this wine showed the freshness of the vintage in its bright woodland-berry scent before settling into tannins that felt mineral, powerful and black. Directeur général Paul Pontallier commented at the time, "I consider this to be typical, absolutely, of Château Margaux." Two years on, the wine is definitively Margaux, from the fashionable scent of new oak, to the musculature and vinous strength of the fruit. The sweetness of the fraises des bois and plum seems improbable in the context of a completely dry, concentrated yet ethereal taste that doesn't stop. The wine will taunt you with its delicate, silken power whether you drink it in ten, 20 or 30 years.
