Martinelli
When Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini emigrated from Tuscany to California in the 1880s, they decided to make an income through growing grapes and farming crops such as apples and hops. Giuseppe had been a winemaker in Italy so used his viticultural knowledge during his work while planting a small area of Zinfandel and Muscat Alexandria vines near their home, which later became known as the famed Jackass Hill vineyard. Today, the Martinellis sell nearly 90% of their grapes to other wineries in Sonoma County but are just as delighted by their familiar foundation and popular flagship wines.
Tasting Notes
- WS91
- Plush, silky and ripe, with aromas of cherry, mineral and spice that lead to layered and jammy wild berry, caramel and herb flavors. A style many will love. Drink now through 2020. 351 cases made.
- RP90
- With 16.1% alcohol, the 2011 Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch was obviously picked ripe. There are 350 cases of this cuvee, which was made from the same clonal material from the Jackass and Jackass Hill vineyards. Aromas of ripe figs, black currants, incense, camphor and underbrush emerge from this full-bodied Zin. It possesses slightly more tannin than its siblings, and requires consumption over the next 3-4 years.
