Scarecrow

"Many local vintners consider Scarecrow one of the crown jewels of Napa Valley."
- James Laube, The Wine Spectator

In 1943, Joseph Judson Cohn, an MGM executive producer of films such as The Wizard of Oz acquired the 195-acre (79 ha) property of Rutherford land adjacent to Inglenook Winery founded by Gustave Niebaum. In 1945 he was persuaded by his neighbor in charge of Inglenook since 1939, John Daniel Jr., to plant grape vines on his estate. 80 acres (32 ha) were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, and the fruit from the Cohn estate was sold to Inglenook. In later years, the fruit from the J.J. Cohn Estate was sold to Opus One, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Robert Mondavi Winery and Beaulieu Vineyard.

Today, the Scarecrow label pays tribute to the endearing and indomitable character from J.J. Cohn's 'The Wizard of Oz'. Scarecrow evokes a distinctly American agricultural icon and American optimism. And most importantly, Scarecrow honors the remarkable life of J.J. Cohn.

Cohn lived to be 100 years old, spanning a defining century that he helped shape. The people who labor with passion and conviction to bring you Scarecrow wine are proud to be part of his living legacy."

Tasting Notes

WA95
The 2013 M. Etain Cabernet Sauvignon, which is hardly a second wine by any means, offers beautiful blackcurrant fruit with some cedar wood/sandalwood notes, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and that layered texture that is so enticing. The wine has a beautiful opaque purple color, hints of graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a touch of licorice and the soil undertones that some would say are part of the so-called "Rutherford dust" scenario, although that`s debatable. This wine has the sweetness and opulence to be drunk young, but won`t hit its prime for at least another 5-8 years and keep for 20-30.
V94
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon M. Etain is a superb second wine. The pedigree here is simply striking. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and spice blossom in the glass, but above all else, the M. Etain is a wine of pure texture. A deep, inky wine, the 2013 offers a compelling interplay of aromas and flavors, with marvelous depth to match its captivating personality. Frankly, it`s virtually impossible to put the glass down. The M. Etain was bottled a few months before the Scarecrow, so it is even more expressive than its big brother.
