Château Cos d’Estournel is a revered, first rate winery in St- Estéphe though it was classified a Second Growth in 1855. The château itself is one of the most recognizable in all of Bordeaux, as it sits atop a ridge, resembles an opulent Asian pagoda and neighbors with Lafite Rothschild. In old Gascon, Cos translates to ‘the hill of stones’ which describes its gravely, limestone, well drained terroir. Though it is predominantly Merlot based, atypical for wines of Médoc, the wines are full-bodied, tannic, deeply complex and ageable.
Château Cos d’Estournel 1996 is a distinguished Second Growth from Saint-Estèphe, showcasing the region's elegant and classic style. The blend predominantly consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and Merlot (35%), aged for approximately 18 months in high-quality new French oak. This vintage is characterized by its complex aromas of graphite, cedar, and tobacco, complemented by earthy notes and hints of mint. On the palate, it reveals a firm structure with juicy acidity and fine tannins, promising longevity. The wine reflects a nuanced balance of rich fruit flavors, including blackcurrant and dark cherry, all while maintaining a classic restraint typical of its pedigree.
