Araujo Estate

Staying true to their mission statement “To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction,” Bart and Daphne Araujo have been creating magnificent wines from their own Eisele Vineyard, which was included in Robert Parker Jr.’s The World’s Greatest Wine Estates: A. Modern Perspective”. Hailed by critics, the Eisele Vineyards has been producing world class Cabernets since 1964. Araujo is revered for their ability to create world-class cult wines organically. With the judicious use of Biodynamics, their wines can be laid down for 25+ years. Former winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo has recently turned over operations to the more-than-capable hands of Niles Kingsman, who came to Araujo from Krupp Brothers Winery. Araujo produces four wines each year totaling 2000 cases: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard (1995 98pts Wine Advocate); Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard.

Tasting Notes

WA95
I had inserted this wine in a blind tasting. I did not know where it would appear, but I knew it would be in the tasting, and I was able to pick it out when it was served. However, the rest of the tasters thought it was a large-scaled Bordeaux from the Medoc. This magnificent California Cabernet offers that exciting blend of power and elegance. The opaque purple color is followed by copious quantities of sweet, mineral, licorice, floral-laden, blackcurrant fruit, full body, exceptional purity, good underlying, well-integrated acidity and tannin, and a whoppingly long finish. Typical of many top California wines, it combines magnificent richness and ripeness with a sense of gracefulness and complexity. Although young, it is soft enough to be enjoyed.
WS95
A dark, profoundly rich and compelling wine, still showing pretty toast and mocha-scented oak a plush, opulent, beautifully defined core of currant, plum and blackberry. Finishes with a gorgeous array of complex, vibrant fruit aromas. Remarkably youthful, worthy of further cellaring and seemingly capable of lasting another 15 years or more.--'81/'91 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2016.
