The Humbrecht 2005 Muscat d’Alsace Goldert needed 14 months to finish fermenting and in the process (like the 2004) it certainly acquired a wealth of flavor and textural nuance, but also retains a youthful yeastiness and fermentative overlay even from bottle. Sea spray, chalk dust, and iodine pungency lend a decidedly mineral cast even to the aromas, with more typical citrus and pit fruits in the background. In the mouth though, brash citricity and pungent herbs deliver a near tongue-lashing, so that despite its 16 grams of sugar, this finishes virtually dry. A complex sense of minerality returns in the finish, without the wine losing any of its pointed citricity, indeed this is the most penetratingly intense as well as mineral young Goldert Muscat I can recall, and should reward at least a decade of cellaring.
