Domaine Anne Gros
Anne Gros, the daughter of Francois Gros, took over her family’s winery at the end of the nineteen eighties. The Gros family dates back as a winemaking family within the Cote de Nuits, more specifically Vosne-Romanee since the early eighteen hundreds. Anne Gros has quickly become one of the most sought-after wineries within Burgundy, developing as a bit of a cult winery in praise of her expertise as a winemaker. Her vineyard sites are found scattered in the beautiful limestone driven soils of the Cote de Nuits, the largest within Vosne-Romanee, following Flagey-Echezeaux, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, and Concoeur. The wine still is terroir driven with 80% new oak in the Grand Cru wines, providing structure alongside the natural finesse of her Red Burgundies.

- Here is another great wine from Anne Gros, which will reward those with the patience and nouse to cellar for an extended period. The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is backward and reticent on the nose, but it only takes a few swirls of the glass and it reveals gorgeous black cherry and raspberry fruit mixed with a hint of dark chocolate from some residual new oak that will be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity. There is a smorgasbord of lush raspberry and wild strawberry fruit cloaked in new oak, but the wood does not obscure the grape variety or vineyard, allowing the character of the wine to be expressed with hints of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. What a great Richebourg, but one that I would actually afford another five years in the cellar. This is long-term.

- There is still relatively prominent wood framing the dense and wonderfully spicy black pinot fruit and ripe cherry-suffused nose. The big-bodied and solidly well-concentrated flavors display plenty of verve and power along with really lovely complexity…
