Fontodi winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classic in the area that is referred to as “Conca d’Oro” (the golden shell) which is steep hillsides covered in vineyards, in the shape of a shell or an amphitheater with the vines soaking up the sun.
This beloved winery has been in the hands of the Manetti family since 1968 with the focus on constantly improving grape quality using organic and biodynamic methods. As they have made all efforts to improve quality in the vineyards, they have noticed that their vines rea producing more richness, complexity, and great intensity which should age longer than their predecessors. These rich, complex wines explode on the palate with defined flavors and juiciness. This is a wine you will drink and remember forever.
Tasting Notes
- WA95
- The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I’m not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine’s inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030.
- WS95
- Aromas and flavors of violet, black currant, raspberry and spice gain intensity as this red builds to its lengthy conclusion. Vibrant and harmonious, this needs some time to shed its well-proportioned tannins. Sangiovese. Best from 2017 through 2030. 4,000 cases made.
