The Winery
Le Macchiole
Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany. They are most well-known for their IGT Toscana wines: the Cabernet Franc-based Paleo, the Merlot-based Messorio, and the Syrah-based Scrio. These wines are often described as the best example of these grapes in the region, especially since they are not indigenous to Bolgheri. The winery focuses on releasing mono-varietals that portray innovation and risk which is unusual for most of tradition-focused Tuscany. Since Eugenio’s sudden death in 2002, Cinzia has taken over the management of the property and the production of the wines. With around 60 acres of estate owned vineyards today, all of their land is organically farmed and perfectly-suited for their collectible wines.
Tasting Notes
- WS96
- Dark color, with an attractive intensity of raspberry, blackberry and new oak. Full-bodied, with focused yet tight fruit and supersilky tannins. Very refined and racy for a Syrah. Black pepper and dark fruits come out at the finish. Will develop beautifully in the bottle. Best after 2012.
- WSM95
- Eugenio Campolmi planted Bolgheri's first syrah when he began experimenting with vineyards there in the 1980s. His partner, Cinzia Merli, now runs the estate, the wines made by Luca D'Attoma since 1991. This is the best vintage of Scrio I have tasted, with a delicious red character, a wine that captures the elegance and staying power of the region's best within a completely different flavor profile: Here it is cool cedar and exotic green spice, luscious fruit in beautiful, sculptural curves. The bold sweep of flavor focuses into a tight, savory finish that lasts for minutes.
