Vietti
Tracing its roots back to the 19th Century, the Vietti estate embodies all that is Piedmont. In 1919 Patriarch Mario Vietti made the winery’s first wines and by 1952 they had grown into one of the top-level producers in Piedmont as one of the first producers to export their Italian wines to the United States. They are particularly known for the range of single-vineyard Barolo, Barbera, and the association with “rediscovering” the Arneis grape variety, so much that Alfredo Currado, who married into the Vietti family, is considered the “Father of Arneis.” With 35 acres and growing, Vietti expects to not only increase production but have even more control over their vineyards to further excel in the 21st Century.
Tasting Notes
- WS98
- Dark in color, with a fabulous purity of fruit, from blackberry to blueberry. Full-bodied, showing awesome concentration, but with a finish that's beautiful and honest. Best after 2013.
- WA94
- What a joy it is to taste the 2005 Barolo Lazzarito. A dramatic, large-scaled wine, the Lazzarito sweeps across the palate with awesome density and richness. Classic Serralunga notes of melted road tar, menthol, new leather, spices, plums and black cherries emerge from this breathtaking, powerful Barolo. Currado has backed off the French oak and gradually lengthened maceration times in this bottling which has resulted in a Barolo of uncommon elegance and transparency to site. Despite the wine’s sheer opulence, the finish is long and fresh, with lingering notes of tobacco and autumn leaves, suggesting the Lazzarito has years of fine drinking ahead of it. This is a superb effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035.
