Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 1999 3L

The Winery

Chateau Montelena

“There is something reassuring about seeing a bottle of Chateau Montelena. This classic, old Napa Valley winery is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but they can also fashion wonderful Chardonnay from the Alexander and Napa valleys.”
-Robert Parker

Chateau Montelena is one of the most prominent and oldest Napa Valley wineries tracing its origins back to 1882. This winery is now under the ownership of the Barrett family and they are particularly famous for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Thanks to the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting where Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay outranked France’s best white burgundies. This seminal event helped put California in the forefront of the wine world. Today, the Barrett family continues to produce the finest wines in California and to be the benchmark of quality.

Summary

The Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 1999 is a classic expression of Napa Valley, crafted from low-yield vineyards beneath Mt. St. Helena. This wine is characterized by its deep black/purple hue and remarkable concentration, showcasing a powerful profile of black fruits like blackberry and currant, complemented by notes of dark chocolate and minerality. The wine exhibits a youthful vibrancy with significant acidity and ripe tannins, suggesting excellent aging potential. Aged in French oak, it balances richness with structure, offering a long, fruit-driven finish. This vintage exemplifies the estate's classic style, rooted in its historic terroir and meticulous winemaking.

Tasting Notes

WA95
The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (an 8,600-case cuvee made from yields of 1.98 tons of fruit per acre) is considered by Bo Barrett to be a "great" year. The wine boasts a saturated inky/purple color as well as extraordinary density of fruit and cassis, and huge tannin, body, and extract. It is a substantial, palate-staining, long, muscular Cabernet that should only be purchased by connoisseurs with cold cellars as well as patience. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.
WS94
Beautifully crafted, dark, rich and polished, with a tight beam of blackberry and currant fruit that's sharply focused and tightly wound. Turns supple and finishes with a long, lingering, fruit-propelled finish. Excellent structure for aging.
