Their three different vineyards throughout Calistoga range from hillside to dry farmed, to create three different Napa Cabs. - The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Jake’s Creek Vineyard (360 cases) has closed down considerably since bottling, and was so virile, masculine, and tannic that I could not rate it as highly as the barrel sample tasted last year. There is a lot going on, but the wine is extremely backward. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising nose of smoke, black fruits, graphite, chocolate, and espresso roast. Dark, broodingly backward, and tannic, but also extremely concentrated, it needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should evolve for at least two decades thereafter. If the tannin becomes better assimilated, look for the score to rise significantly.
