The Winery

Château Leoville Poyferre

"There is a perpetual tendency to categorize other people's actions and achievements by their so-called recipes. I have to disappoint you. I would say that my first recipe is the fact that I do not have a recipe. For me, everything started on my own properties. As a result of continuous observation, I decided to experiment with ideas which turned out to be improvements."
- Michel Rolland on the “Rolland Method”

Leoville Poyferre at one time was a member of the Leoville Estate which also included Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton. The Saint Julien estates were initially split up during the French Revolution, and again finally in 1840 when Poyferre was born. The Cuvelier family is the current owner, and operations in the cellar are closely counseled by Michael Rolland. Taking a turn for modern, with Rolland at the helm, is what really rescued the estate and resulted in some outstanding vintages in the 80’s. Can’t make money without spending it, so major renovations were made both in the cellar and in the vineyards. What is really remarkable about the estate is the absolutely reasonable pricing along with the balance in the wines, which can be attributed to the use of 75% new French oak.

Summary

Léoville Poyferré 2009 is a distinguished red Bordeaux blend from the renowned Saint-Julien region, characterized by its opulence and depth. This wine showcases a vibrant purple hue and exudes aromas of crème de cassis, blueberries, and roses, complemented by hints of graphite and exotic spices. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, featuring plush, integrated tannins and a luxurious mouthfeel. The balance of sweetness from the ripe fruits and the underlying structure provides a hedonistic yet fresh experience. With aging potential, this vintage promises to evolve beautifully over the coming decades. The blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and the remainder Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Notes

WA100
One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040.
