Bouchard Pere et Fils

"There is the time of ageing during which the wine sheds the excesses of youth in the calm of the cellar, then that of maturation during which, in bottle, it develops all the nuances and characteristics of its place of birth. The greatest wines thus possess an ageing potential over several decades."
- Joseph Henriot

When you think of over-delivery in Burgundy, think of Bouchard Pere et Fils. Named by Wine Spectator as the 2008 “Sleeper Vintage - Top Value Wines,” this Bourgogne producer, grower, and negociant has been building a legacy for the past 275 years.

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, maintaining tradition for nearly three centuries. The family continued to grow their holdings, adding vineyards in Beaune Grèves for their iconic “Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus”. With a focus on longevity and value, Bouchard’s Philippe Prost lets the vineyards speak through the wines with little intervention during the winemaking process.

Ripeness, longevity, terroir and value since 1731 - this is Bouchard.

Tasting Notes

BH93–96
Note that I was shown two versions of this wine, one from Domaine fruit and another that was purchased. Prost indicated that there might be two wines released or they might be blended. The wine reviewed here is from Domaine fruit and was significantly better than the purchased example. A ripe, reserved and cool nose of flat out gorgeous complexity leads to beautifully delineated, powerful and robust flavors that somehow manage to remain understated on the hugely long and spicy finish. This has the 'wow' factor in spades and is a strong candidate for the Clos de Vougeot of the vintage (along with the Leroy and Dr. George Mugneret versions). Range: 93-96
WA89–91
Notes of tallow, charred meat, and blackberry rise from the glass of Bouchard’s 2005 Clos Vougeot crafted from purchased fruit. Broad and expansive, rich, substantial and creamy in texture on the palate, this displays impressively concentrated black fruit, meat, and savory, soy-like essences and a solid finish. It ought to repay at least 8-10 years in the cellar, although one must add that a track record cannot yet have been established for the quality of wine that Bouchard Pere & Fils has begun crafting of late. Range: 89-91
