Larry Turley founded Turley Wine Cellars project in 1993 with a desire and love for old vine Zinfandel. As a former emergency room physician, he jokes that he resuscitates these old vines in producing beautiful and intense wines. Pairing up with winemaker, Tegan Passalacqua they have an assortment of Napa and Central Coast Vineyards producing mostly Zinfandel, Petite Syrah and a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignons.
Robert M. Parker Jr. has called Larry Turley “the world’s premier Zinfandel specialist…he built Turley Wine Cellars into a showcase for the fruit, power and intensity of Zinfandel.” Production is extremely low, so getting your hands on these phenomenal bottles could be tough, but we have quite the selection!
The Turley Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge 2004 is a distinctive red wine from a high-elevation site on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. This limited bottling reflects the unique terroir, characterized by iron-rich volcanic soils and low-yield, head-trained vines. The 2004 vintage was notably warm, resulting in a concentrated crop. The wine presents a slightly roasted nose with port-like nuances, featuring fat, lush plum and dark berry flavors. While it offers reasonable definition, it leans towards a heavier profile. The finish reveals building tannins and a solid structure, although it could benefit from a touch more vibrancy. This Zinfandel’s richness and intensity make it a noteworthy selection in Turley’s portfolio.
