Domaine Armand Rousseau

"Great wine can be made every year in Burgundy; it is down to hard work in the vineyard and selection in the winery. Selection means firstly fermenting only the healthy, sound berries, and later, rejecting any barrels of wine that don't meet the standard."
- Charles Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most celebrated estates in Burgundy, boasting a rich heritage, noble vines and consistently outstanding wines. Hailing from the Cotes de Nuits, the 35 acre Grand Cru Domaine has been in business since the 1930s, and has always operated as a family affair. Eric Rousseau, the third generation of the family, currently holds the reigns in the cellar and vineyards. Focusing adamantly on small yields, cold fermentation, and 100% new oak, the wines are elegant and age worthy, vintage after vintage.

Tasting Notes

BH95
This is very clearly still on the way up as the cool and ultra-pure nose remains relatively primary with only a touch of secondary development in evidence on the earthy, spicy and elegant dark berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding density to the big-bodied flavors that possess robust power and obvious muscularity all wrapped in firm, focused and moderately austere finish that goes on and on. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume and while this is certainly a forceful, intense wine, it`s not a bruiser as there is lovely balance. In sum, this is a great effort that will, for my taste in any event, need another 7 to 10 years of cellar time to arrive at its apogee.

Rousseau`s 2002 Chambertin is in the zone. Succulent, racy and open, the 2002 is ready to deliver pleasure. The purity of the fruit alone is striking. Even so, the 2002 is still very much at the early part of its first plateau of maturity, as the flavors remain very bright and fresh. In this vertical, the 2002 comes across as a wine of immediacy, with a bit less structure and overall energy than the very best vintages. I say that with some hesitation, as the 2002 is exceptional. It is just a little less exceptional than a few of the other wines in this vertical.
