The Winery

Luciano Sandrone

“We love intense, yet fragrant and harmonic wines, which can converse on equal terms with those who love them, not from a position of dominance. We love wines that are resistant to time and that each time they have the courage to tell the colors, scents, and flavors that won’t repeat themselves because they are unique. We love wines that are the sum of many integral elements, all of which are useful and no one is dominant. We love unique and distinctive wines, which at some point end and only the memory of their emotions can satisfy our need to find them again.” –Luciano Sandrone, Proprietor

Particularly known for their red wines made from the Nebbiolo grape, Luciano Sandrone is a wine producer who is adamant about keeping it all in the family. The estate was founded in 1978 after Luciano bought a parcel of the Cannubi winery, and wines were initially made in his family garage. The Azienda Agricola's flagship wine is the opulent and complex Cannubi Boschis Barolo and was catapulted into the international wine spotlight when its 1989 and 1990 vintages gained 97 and 100 points, respectively, from Wine Critic Robert Parker. There is a total of 67 acres of vines on the estate, and 75% of them are owned by the Sandrone family. It is a common motto of the family to work from the heart and continue to create wines precise with accuracy and authenticity.

Tasting Notes

WA98
I was blown away by the breathtaking purity and definition of Sandrone’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. A translucent dark ruby, this weightless yet sumptuous Barolo bursts from the glass with layers of dark ripe fruit that coat the palate with stunning grace and elegance. As it sits in the glass notes of licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak gradually emerge to complete this magnificent wine. I tasted this along with the 2001, which has shut down considerably since I last tasted it earlier this year. Today the 2004 is the more elegant wine although the 2001 looks to be more powerful and perhaps longer-lived. My rating of the 2001 (95) appears to have been conservative by about 2 points. One of the highlights of the vintage, Sandrone’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Aromas of rose petal and ripe fruit, with plum undertones. Full-bodied, with wonderful, focused ripe fruit and a silky, refined finish. The texture is polished and refined. This is classy.
