Valdicava (Vincenzo Abbruzzese) Brunello di Montalcino 2003

The Winery

Valdicava

Located in the north of Montalcino, Tuscany, Valdicava wine estate produces some of the highest quality wines in the world by showing different expressions of the opulent Sangiovese grape. The warming sensation from the nearby Tirrean Sea, the protective barrier of the “Monte Amiata”, the cooling breezes of surrounding wooded forests along with moderate rain fall facilitate the particularly unique growth of the Valdicava grapes.

The Brunello-focused estate has given their absolute attention to the vines to produce a great balance of body and aroma, making every bottle a treasured collectible. The hard work and attention to the details in the terroir is evident for the consumers of any Valdicava, now and for years to come.

Summary

The Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 2003 is a distinguished red wine from Tuscany, crafted entirely from estate-grown Sangiovese. Known for its rigorous vineyard selection and low yields, this vintage showcases the estate's commitment to quality. The 2003 heatwave necessitated early harvesting, yet the wine reflects a rich character with aromas of dark fruits, spices, and earthy undertones. Full-bodied with silky tannins, it delivers intense fruit and mineral flavors, culminating in a long finish. This wine embodies the strength and complexity typical of the region, having matured in large Slavonian oak casks for over three years, and is noted for its aging potential.

Tasting Notes

WA91
Valdicava’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, brooding effort loaded with black cherries, smoke, tar and earthiness. This expressive, powerful wine needs at least another year or two to settle down. While not as extreme as the 2001, it stands apart for its intensity of color and the sheer volume of its extract. In 2003 the Brunello spent three and a half years in 45 and 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks. Abruzzese says the spring rains in the northern part of Montalcino left the wines with enough water reserves to mature without going into hydric stress. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
