Sassicaia
Since the experimental winemaking session in the 1940s that created world renowned Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido has consistently gone above and beyond Italian wine law requirements. Made from predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, the production of this wine caused quite the stir due to the lack of traditional Tuscan and Piedmont grapes such as Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Founder Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta created the wine as Italy’s version of Bordeaux when he noticed similar gravelly terrain in Maremma as there was in the Graves region of Bordeaux. It was not until about 1960s when the producer quickly gained fame and today is still generating some of the most sought-after bottles in Italy.

Tasting Notes

- This supremely elegant and age-worthy Sassicaia opens with an intense bouquet of black cherry, Mediterranean herbs, blue flower, cedar and leather aromas. Powerful but graceful, the palate delivers a vibrant core of black cherry accented with white pepper, mineral and balsamic notes alongside youthful but polished tannins and vibrant acidity. It`s not as exuberant as some of its counterparts, but it may outlive all the other Bolgheri 2010s. Drink 2018–2040.

- The 2010 Sassicaia is intensely saline, savory and energetic. Rosemary, sage, plums and black cherry notes meld into graphite, crushed rocks and a host of other more mineral-inflected nuances. Beautifully persistent and chiseled in the glass, the 2010 is ultimately all about energy. This is going to be a fascinating vintage to follow.
