Delas Frères

Under the inspired leadership of winemaker/ administrator Jacques Grange, who has carte blanche authority from the proprietors, the Louis Roederer/Deutz Champagne Firm, Delas has been on a fabulous qualitative roll for over a decade. They have enjoyed some great successes.
– Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

As a wine estate located in northern part of France’s Rhône Valley, Delas Frères is an estate known for its Syrah-dominant wines with the Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Crozes-Hermitages designations. Although the Delas family has been making wine since 1835 in the Rhône Valley, it was not until 1924 that they took the current name of the estate. In 1993, the Rouzaud family, owners of Louis Roederer, acquired both Delas Frères and Champagne Deutz. The family has parcels throughout the Rhone valley, most notably being the Domaine des Tourettes in Hermitage which is famously located on the steep granite part of the esteemed Hermitage hill. Additionally, they producer has a 45 acre vineyard in Crozes-Hermitage as well as a range of single vineyard wines from contract growers throughout the valley.

Tasting Notes

WA99
Even better and one of the top two to three wines in the vintage, the 2011 Hermitage Les Bessards (100% Syrah that spent 16 months in 70% new French oak) possesses an inky purple color to go with a fabulously rich, pure bouquet of smoked earth, ground pepper, underbrush and licorice that’s supported by awesome black raspberry and cassis-styled fruit. Full-bodied, seamless and layered, with masses of sweet tannin and notable structure, this beauty bucks the vintage stereotype and will need short-term cellaring to become approachable. It will have 2-3 decades of longevity.
WS94
A dark, muscular, slightly rugged style, with chunky-edged grip supporting loam, bittersweet cocoa, steeped black currant and charcoal notes, with buried acidity emerging on the finish. This should be tamed by cellaring as the smoldering edge settles into the background.
