The Winery

Marquis d’Angerville

As a highly regarded producer in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy, Marquis d’Angerville is as historic as most of the wineries in the region and dates back to 1507. The domaine did not become renown until the 1920s when it began to produce wine commercially without a négociant, and they were one of the first leading producers to do so. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that Marquis d’Angerville produces come from eight premier cru vineyards spread through mostly Volnay with some also located in Meursault and Pommard. Although most of the top sites are planted to Pinot Noir, the premier cru vineyard of Meursault Santenots is planted to both varieties, but must be labeled according to different designations. Although their vineyard holdings are less than 37 acres, included in their parcels is the prized monopole of Clos Des Ducs. In more recent news, the domaine expanded into the Jura region when they purchased the Domaine du Pélican and its estate vineyards. Today, the winery is ruun by Guillaume d’Angerville with a combination of modernity and preservation of essential values to complement their complex bottlings.

Tasting Notes

BH94
As it almost always is in its youth, this is a linear wine but the '02 ratchets up the minerality and that sense of almost exacting precision and detail. The tannins are not quite as firm as those of the Taillepieds yet here there is another level of elegance and purity with absolutely perfect harmony and a subtle, understated, almost Zen-like reserve. In short, this is a classic Clos des Ducs that will rival such memorable vintages as 1978, 1985, 1991 1993, 1996 and 1999. If you love Clos des Ducs, don't miss the '02.

The 2002 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has meliorated since I last tasted it back in 2010. Here, it has a really quite entrancing bouquet, that transparency intact but the fruit enhanced with time: strawberry and red currant, almost a "flinty" mineralité underneath. The palate is very poised and has gained a little complexity, linear and regal. It has a crystalline finish, graceful and effervescent with touch of orange zest lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.
