Château Cos d’Estournel is a revered, first rate winery in St- Estéphe though it was classified a Second Growth in 1855. The château itself is one of the most recognizable in all of Bordeaux, as it sits atop a ridge, resembles an opulent Asian pagoda and neighbors with Lafite Rothschild. In old Gascon, Cos translates to ‘the hill of stones’ which describes its gravely, limestone, well drained terroir. Though it is predominantly Merlot based, atypical for wines of Médoc, the wines are full-bodied, tannic, deeply complex and ageable.
Château Cos d’Estournel 1998 is a distinguished red Bordeaux blend from Saint-Estèphe, renowned for its unique character and historical significance. Known as the 'Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe,' this wine showcases a higher than usual Merlot content due to favorable conditions for the varietal in this vintage. The wine exhibits a deep ruby-purple hue and offers a complex nose with aromas of black fruits, violets, and tobacco. On the palate, it reveals tart black fruit, plum, and herbal notes with a touch of spice, complemented by good acidity and velvety tannins. While the density and concentration are commendable, the wine's elegance lies in its balance and finesse, making it a classic example of a structured Bordeaux.
